Interview with Buhle Mxunyelwa:- Western Province
Tell us more about your rugby career?
I spent my schools days at Stirling High School and then continued my rugby career in East London where I played for the Border U21 side and then was drafted into the senior squad. I got most of my caps coming off the bench for Border. I am now playing my rugby in the Cape and have been a member of the Western Province Currie Cup side.
How was your experience on the Investec International Rugby Academy High Performance Course?
It was a fantastic experience, where I really learned the importance of pushing one’s self to the limits in order to reach ones full potential. I also realised how important the mental side of the game is and the numerous sessions on mental toughness really opened my eyes to a different aspect of the game. I walked away from the course with plenty of self belief and was determined to achieve more.
How did the course affect your personal game?
It was awesome to rub shoulders with a legend of the game like Richard Loe and he taught me so much about front row play. Scrumming is such an important aspect of the game and he really taught me a lot. It’s great to learn from someone that has played at the highest level and that is what is so special about this course; you get to learn from ex-players that want to share their knowledge.
What are your personal and professional goals for the next few years?
I want to continue to use the knowledge I learned on the course and grow, not only as a player, but also as a person. I have had such a great time playing rugby and being a part of some wonderful teams and I hope to take everything I have learned and continue to improve. It is a tough setup at WP and my immediate goal is to be a part of the Currie Cup Squad and as I grow in experience; I hope to push on to higher levels.
